Need to get more buff

I am at a law enforcement conference representing my company, and being around all these young guns is making me have to suck in the gut. Not cool!

At a barbeque a few years ago, I met a friend of a friend.

He was a competitive weight lifter and had been the state AAU champion for his weight group for years.

He was in his mid 30's at the time. He was a state trooper and had his hands full with his work, young children and their activities, in addition to his training.

It has just been the last few years that the young guys who had nothing better to do than train were beginning to pass him up.

My (almost) return to the gym got me to thinking about something that happened in the 80s.

Me and my 20-something pals where gym rats. Not much else to do in NE Nebraska besides that or drink.

Anyhow, there was a 40-something guy that read meters for the gas company. He busted his ass to stay in shape -- ran, lifted, etc. But he was fighting a losing battle and we'd frequently see him nursing injuries.

He was good natured and we teased him. I remember one day when he smiled and said: "Boys, one day this is going to be you."

Every time I drag myself into the gym or bootcamp I can hear Mark's prophetic words.

Sigh.

Rick, this is a good point. Life gets in the way of our best intentions and resolutions. Since I have moved from the DC area, I haven't seriously trained. Been way too long. This has been the longest period of light training in my life!

Bob, I have been following your boot camp and other training experiences with interest, and can relate, since we are about the same age. I train now to stay in shape, but also to avoid injuries. I hate father time, and want to kick his ass, or worse, but don't think I can. :-(
