I first saw this at Dale City Judo Club, and I thought it was great. It's a way to teach the side breakfall (yoko ukemi) at "combat speed," but in a measured, predictable way. The main difference in what you see here is that there is no Gi sleeve to grab, so I wasn't pulling very fast (it loses some of the effectiveness of the drill). Try it, but only after your student have drilled the ukemi on their own many times.
